The National Sign Language Program (NSLP) is administered by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged care and supports the communication needs of d/Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing older people to engage with aged care services and take part in professional and social activities.
You can access the NSLP if you are:
- d/Deaf, Deafblind or hard of hearing
- aged 65 years and older (50 or over for First Nations community members)
- not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Previously, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care offered users access to interpreting services for medical appointments through the National Auslan Booking System.
The National Auslan Booking System has now been replaced by the NSLP, which expands the offering of sign language interpreting and captioning services for health and medical appointments to other professional and social settings, including banking and attending weddings, funerals, clubs and cultural activities.
The expanded program will remain free of charge, with interpreting services under the NSLP arranged through Deaf Connect.
