NRS Chat

NRS Chat is like online instant messaging. The user types their side of the conversation on a computer, tablet or smartphone and then reads the responses of the other person as text provided by a Relay Officer. NRS Chat can be used by anyone who is d/Deaf, hard of hearing or has difficulty using their voice.

How does an NRS Chat call work?

What equipment is needed?

An internet connection and a computer, tablet or smartphone. Calls are made through the NRS app or the NRS Chat call page(Opens in a new tab/window).

How much will it cost?

It's free to use the NRS. However, NRS Chat uses data, so your device will need to be connected to WiFi or have a plan with data available.

Step-by-step instructions

  Go to the Make an NRS Chat call page (nrschat.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Chat call link at the top of the page in accesshub.gov.au
  
  Or, you can make an NRS Chat call using the NRS app. Just open the app and select NRS Chat (Type + Read) from the Select your call type menu.

  Log in using the phone number and password you set up during registration.
  
  If you need to register for the NRS then click on the ‘not registered’ link. Follow the prompts and register.

  Go to Make a call. Type the area code and number to call into the phone number box.
- 4.
  
  If you are using the app, you can enter the area code and phone number you want to call, then skip to Step number 7.
- 5.
  
  If dialling a number starting with 1800, 1300 or 13, look at the dropdown box and choose the state where you are calling from.
- 6.
  
  Click connect now.
- 7.
  
  Wait to be transferred to a Relay Officer (RO) who will place the call to the number given.
- 8.
  
  Wait for the other person’s greeting. Wait to read ‘GA’ (Go ahead) before replying.
- 9.
  
  Type your message and type ‘GA’ when you’re finished.
  
  Press enter on the keyboard or click send.
  
  Read the other person’s messages on the screen and remember to wait until you see ‘GA’ before replying.

  To end the call, type ‘goodbye SKSK’ (Stop Keying. Stop Keying).
- 11.
  
  Wait to read ‘RO here, would you like to make another call? GA’.
- 12.
  
  To make another call, type the area code and phone number into the phone number box. To finish, click hang up.

  To receive an NRS Chat call, your caller will need to call the NRS on 1300 553 467 and:
  
  provide the phone number you registered with and your name; and
  
  ask to be connected to you.

  Go to the Make an NRS Chat call page (nrschat.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Chat call link at the top of the page in accesshub.gov.au.
- 3.
  
  Or if you are using the app, select NRS Chat (Type and Read) then click on Receive a call near the bottom of the screen.
- 4.
  
  You need to log on first using the phone number you registered with and your password. If you are not registered – click the not registered(Opens in a new tab/window) link and follow the prompts.

  On the right-hand side of the next screen it will tell you that you are logged in and can receive calls.
- 6.
  
  Click on the red Receive a call button.
- 7.
  
  A chat window will automatically open. Keep this window open to receive a call.
  
  When someone calls there will be a message received in the chat window. Answer the message to start your chat session.
- 8.
  
  Type ‘Hello GA’ (Go ahead) and press enter or click send. Wait to be transferred to a Relay Officer who will let the caller know you have accepted the call.
- 9.
  
  Wait for the caller’s greeting. Wait to read ‘GA’ before replying.
- 10.
  
  Type a message and type ‘GA’ when you want the caller to respond. Press enter or click send.
  
  Read the other person’s messages on the screen. Wait to read ‘GA’ before replying each time.
- 11.
  
  To end the call, type ‘goodbye SKSK’ (Stop Keying. Stop Keying).
  
  Read ‘goodbye SKSK’ from the caller. Click hang up.

  Go to the Make an NRS Chat call page (nrschat.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Chat call link at the top of the page in accesshub.gov.au
- 2.
  
  Click the red “Call 000” button or type Triple Zero (000).
- 3.
  
  Wait to be transferred to the Relay Officer.
- 4.
  
  The Relay Officer will ask which emergency service is needed and the location of the emergency.
- 5.
  
  Type FFF for Fire, PPP for Police or AAA for Ambulance.
  
  Type the street address or exact location of the emergency.
  
  Type GA (Go ahead).
- 6.
  
  The Relay Officer will connect to the Emergency Services Officer (ESO) and will stay on the line and relay your call to the ESO.
- 7.
  
  Try to stay calm and answer the Emergency Services Officer as well as you can. Type GA each time you finish typing an answer.
- 8.
  
  Type Go Ahead/GA after you finish answering each time. Wait to read ‘GA’ before replying each time.
- 9.
  
  Do not hang up until the RO tells you that call is finished.
